The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the settlement which expanded surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were subsequently executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable industrial town during the 19th century, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its terrific road and rail communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London.
