River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement which expanded around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to its proximity to London, plus its good rail and road connections.
