Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the settlement which evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, and its terrific road and rail links.

The town is found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
