Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of around 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the 1980's, since much of its plants ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to London, plus the exceptional road and rail links.

Chelmsford is positioned close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London.
