Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industries closed, in spite of this it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
