Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the community that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industries closed down, nevertheless it continues to be a successful and booming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the first rate rail and road communications.
