Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly due to the close proximity to London, and its quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
