The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the settlement that developed in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were later put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its factories went bust, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, primarily because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is positioned near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 km car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
