Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town has a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the town that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry closed, even so it still is a successful and developing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its outstanding rail and road communications.

The town stands near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
