The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of about 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune that grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were later executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless alleged witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, making products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, plus the exceptional rail and road communications.
