The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were consequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, however it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding rail and road links.

The town stands close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
