River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading culprits were accordingly hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it remains a flourishing and booming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road links.

The town lies beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
