A Saxon camp came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a vital industrial town during the 19th Cent, making items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry shut down, although it remains a successful and expanding town today, largely due to its proximity to London, plus the good road and rail communications.
