The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the town which expanded round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, producing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its production facilities closed, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, mostly due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus the good rail and road communications.

The town lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
