The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the village that evolved around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industries shut down, in spite of this it remains a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail connections.

The town is found beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
