The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the village that developed in the locality of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it remains a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to its nearness to London, and its good rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
