The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many alleged witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its production facilities closed, even so it is still a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to London, and the outstanding road and rail communications.
