River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the community which grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many suspected witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industries shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly because of its closeness to London, plus its quality road and rail links.
