Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry shut down, nonetheless it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to its proximity to London, and its outstanding road and rail links.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
