A Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry shut down, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail connections.

The town is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
