The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industries went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to London, plus the exceptional road and rail links.
