Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of about 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the village which expanded around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main agitators were accordingly executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industrial facilities closed, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mainly because of its nearness to the capital, and its exceptional rail and road communications.
