Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the town which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the 19th C, making such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its production facilities shut down, but it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to the close proximity to the city of london, and its terrific road and rail links.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
