The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of about thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, principally due to its closeness to the capital, plus its good rail and road connections.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
