Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of roughly 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the community which evolved round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered significant decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industrial facilities closed down, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
