Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail communications.
