The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the commune that expanded round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit many times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, but it still is a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its proximity to London, plus its excellent rail and road connections.
