An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, making products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, and its excellent rail and road connections.
