Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to the nearness to London, and its terrific rail and road communications.
