For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its production facilities went bust, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, plus its first rate rail and road connections.
