The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of roughly 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.
