Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the town that developed in the vicinity of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th century, producing such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its good road and rail communications.

The town sits just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
