The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 110,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
