A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were subsequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its industry closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the quality road and rail communications.
