Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless assumed witches.
