The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its factories went bust, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, principally due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the terrific road and rail connections.
