The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of about 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless assumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into substantial decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry closed, though it still is a successful and blooming town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus its first class road and rail connections.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
