River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the community that expanded round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, largely due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional rail and road connections.
