The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).
