The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement that evolved around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless presumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into significant decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly due to the closeness to the capital, plus the good rail and road communications.

The town can be found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
