Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, around 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement that expanded in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to its nearness to the capital, and the terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
