The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the commune which expanded round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town during the 19th century, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry went bust, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail links.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
