River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved in the area of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was documented as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a vital industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, yet it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mainly because of its proximity to London, plus its terrific road and rail links.
