Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its production facilities closed, all the same it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to the closeness to the capital, and the terrific road and rail connections.
