A Saxon camp followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, all the same it still is a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and its good road and rail connections.
