The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed witches.
