Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of approximately thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the town that expanded around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it remains a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to the closeness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail communications.

The town lies close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
