Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village which developed surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the superb road and rail connections.

The town lies just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the heart of London.
