Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, mainly due to its nearness to the capital, and its quality rail and road communications.
