Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of roughly 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless alleged witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed down, but it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to the closeness to London, plus the first class rail and road communications.
