The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of about 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the commune which developed around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry closed, all the same it remains a flourishing and developing town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, and the quality rail and road communications.
