Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry went bust, but it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is positioned adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
