A Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, nevertheless it is still a thriving and growing town today, largely because of its nearness to the capital, plus the superb rail and road links.
