The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, even so it still is a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to its nearness to the capital, plus its superb road and rail connections.
