The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of about 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed down, all the same it is still a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its closeness to the city of london, and its terrific rail and road communications.
