The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of about thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the community that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry shut down, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to its close proximity to London, plus the quality road and rail communications.
