The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the capital, plus its good road and rail communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
