The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the community which grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its manufacturing plants shut down, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
