Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were ultimately executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry shut down, though it still is a successful and booming town today, mainly due to its closeness to the city of london, and the good road and rail communications.
