The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the commune that grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless assumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a serious manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, principally due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road connections.
