The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment that developed around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its plants went bust, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to the nearness to the capital, plus the exceptional road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
