The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the community which grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry went bust, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to its nearness to London, plus the excellent rail and road communications.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
