The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of approximately thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the town which grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many assumed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, mostly due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its quality road and rail links.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
