Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the village that grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industrial facilities went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, largely because of its closeness to London, plus the superb rail and road links.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
