A Saxon camp came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry closed, but it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, and the good road and rail links.
