Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment which expanded round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is situated close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital.
