The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industrial facilities closed down, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, mainly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the first class rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
