The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the community which expanded around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless alleged witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, making such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturers went bust, yet it continues to be a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its nearness to the capital, and the excellent road and rail communications.

The town lies close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
