Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of roughly 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the town that developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and blooming town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, plus the quality road and rail communications.

The town is found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
