The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the community that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many supposed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mostly because of its proximity to London, and the first class rail and road communications.

The town is found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
