Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of approximately 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that developed around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a considerable industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry closed down, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
