Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of approximately 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the encampment which developed around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, principally because of its nearness to London, plus its first class road and rail links.

The town sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
