Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of roughly 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the village that evolved in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were later put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered serious decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry shut down, even so it still is a successful and growing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific road and rail connections.

The town is located close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
