Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, around 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a vital industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus the good rail and road communications.
