The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement which developed round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless assumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.
