The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment that evolved in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, largely because of its close proximity to the capital, and its good rail and road communications.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
