A Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, plus the excellent rail and road connections.

The town is set just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
