Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of around 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.
