River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village which evolved in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its plants closed, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its nearness to London, and its quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
