Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline during the 1980's, because much of its production facilities shut down, all the same it continues to be a successful and growing town today, largely due to the nearness to London, and the quality rail and road links.
