It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the village that expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to the proximity to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail connections.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
