Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, plus the superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
