The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of roughly thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the community that expanded in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many supposed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry shut down, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the capital, and its superb road and rail connections.

The town is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
