Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to its nearness to London, and its first rate rail and road links.
