Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the community that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the 1980's, when much of its manufacturers shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to its close proximity to London, plus its superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is located close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
