Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its plants closed, though it still is a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and the superb rail and road links.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
