Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune that expanded in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed down, but it continues to be a successful and growing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, plus the exceptional rail and road links.
