Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the town that grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were ultimately executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry closed, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
