For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, and its excellent road and rail communications.
