River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its production facilities went bust, though it remains a successful and growing town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail connections.
