The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many alleged witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, because much of its industry went bust, nonetheless it is still a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to the closeness to the capital, and its terrific rail and road connections.
