Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the settlement which grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the terrific rail and road communications.
