Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of about thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, nonetheless it remains a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to its closeness to London, and its terrific road and rail links.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
