The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the settlement which grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, making such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into substantial decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, principally because of its proximity to London, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
