The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the town which grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous alleged witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its outstanding road and rail links.

Chelmsford lies close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of the capital.
