The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a populace of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the town which grew up in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless assumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into considerable decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly because of its nearness to London, and its excellent rail and road connections.
