An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a vital manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its manufacturing facilities shut down, nonetheless it still is a successful and booming town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, plus its quality road and rail links.
